Epoxy Resin Mixing Guide

When using Glow in the Dark, UV Reactive, Photochromic, or Thermochromic pigments with epoxy resin systems, a higher pigment loading is recommended compared to conventional paints.

This is because the addition of hardener increases the total volume of the coating, effectively reducing the pigment concentration.

Recommended Mixing Procedure

Step 1 – Mix Pigment into Epoxy Resin

Add the effect pigment directly into the epoxy resin component before adding hardener.

Increase the normal pigment loading ratio by approximately 50%.

Step 2 – Mix Thoroughly

Ensure the pigment is fully dispersed throughout the epoxy resin with no lumps or sediment.

Step 3 – Add Hardener

Once the pigment has been thoroughly mixed into the epoxy resin, add the hardener according to the manufacturer’s recommended ratio.

For our epoxy systems:

  • 100 Parts Epoxy Resin
  • 50 Parts Hardener

Mix thoroughly until the resin and hardener are completely blended.

Step 4 – Apply Immediately

Apply by:

  • Brush
  • Roller
  • Spray Equipment (if suitable for the product)

The mixed epoxy will gradually begin to thicken. For best results, apply within approximately 10 minutes after adding the hardener.

Example – Glow Powder Mixing

For epoxy resin systems:

  • 1 Litre Epoxy Resin
  • 45% Glow Powder (50% more than the standard paint ratio)

Mix the glow powder thoroughly into the epoxy resin first.

Then add:

  • 500ml Hardener

Mix thoroughly again before application.

This results in a final coating with a pigment concentration similar to that achieved in conventional paint systems while maintaining optimum glow performance.

Quick Reference

Effect TypeStandard Paint RatioEpoxy Resin Ratio
Glow in the Dark Powder25% – 35%37.5% – 52.5%
UV Reactive Pigments5% – 15%7.5% – 22.5%
Photochromic Pigments5% – 15%7.5% – 22.5%
Thermochromic Pigments5% – 15%7.5% – 22.5%

Tip: Always mix the pigment into the epoxy resin first, never into the hardener. This provides better dispersion and a more consistent finish.

What Is Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin is a two-part system consisting of:

  1. Epoxy Resin
  2. Hardener

When stored separately, both components typically have a shelf life of 12 months or longer under proper storage conditions.

Once the resin and hardener are mixed together, a chemical reaction begins that gradually cures the liquid into a hard, durable, glossy protective coating. Epoxy resin is widely used for coatings, artwork, tabletops, casting, flooring, and glow-in-the-dark projects.

Most epoxy systems have a working time (pot life) of around 20–40 minutes after mixing, depending on temperature and formulation. During this period, the resin should be applied before it starts thickening and hardening.

Initial curing usually takes 12–24 hours, while full hardness and maximum strength may take several days depending on the epoxy type and environmental conditions.

Does epoxy resin reduce glow brightness?

No. High-quality clear epoxy resin can enhance and protect glow pigments when properly mixed and applied.

Can UV reactive pigment be mixed into epoxy resin?

Yes. UV pigments can be mixed into epoxy resin, polyurethane, clear paint, coatings, plastics, and inks for fluorescent effects under blacklight.

Mixing ratio is 10 to 15% powder to medium measured by weight.

Can solvent-based glow paints be shipped internationally?

Solvent-based paints may be classified as flammable liquids and are often subject to Dangerous Goods regulations.

As a result:

  • Additional shipping charges may apply.
  • Some countries may prohibit importation.
  • Certain couriers may refuse transport.
  • Additional documentation may be required.

If special shipping arrangements are needed, we will contact you after receiving your order.

Are shipping restrictions the same for every country?

No. Shipping regulations vary between countries and carriers. A product that can be shipped to one destination may be restricted or prohibited in another. Availability is determined based on the latest carrier and customs requirements at the time of shipment.

Why does shipping cost vary for paint products?

Paint products are heavier than powders and may require special packaging. Certain paint formulations may also require Dangerous Goods handling, which can result in higher shipping costs than standard products.

How can I check if a product can be shipped to my country?

If you are unsure whether a product can be shipped to your location, please contact us before ordering. Include:

  • Product name
  • Quantity required
  • Destination country

Our team will advise on available shipping options and estimated costs.
